Table 1 International Diabetes Federation criteria [7] for metabolic syndrome

From: Understanding the role of oxidative stress in the incidence of metabolic syndrome and obstructive sleep apnea

For someone to be classified as having MetS they must have: Central obesity (waist circumference for this sample ≥ 94 cm), and at least two of the four components below

Hyperglycemia

Fasting glucose ≥100 mg/dL or previously diagnosed Type 2 diabetes

Plasma triglycerides

TG ≥ 150 mg/dL or existing treatment for this lipid abnormality

HDL cholesterol

<  40 mg/dl or existing treatment for this lipid abnormality

Hypertension

≥ 130 mmHg systolic or ≥ 85 mmHg diastolic or treatment of previously diagnosed high blood pressure
